I spent twenty-two years behind a department store cosmetics counter in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the last nine of those years managing it. That job taught me how much skincare talk gets delivered in a voice that assumes you will not check anything. So when Dr. Okafor told me at my March 2025 skin check to wear sunscreen every single day and to start a retinol slowly if I wanted to, I did the sunscreen first and sat on the retinol for ten months. I bought CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum in January 2026. It is the first retinol I have ever used.

Let me be plain about what I am not. I am not a dermatologist, an esthetician or a doctor. I am fifty-eight, my skin is dry and a little sensitive, and I have fine lines around my eyes and on my forehead plus a few sun spots on my cheekbones from years of beach weekends at Myrtle Beach. Everything below is what I saw in my own mirror and what the product listing says. Nothing more than that.

A hand dispensing a small amount of serum onto a fingertip above a bathroom sink

What actually got me moving was not a wrinkle. It was a photograph. At Simone's birthday dinner in April 2025 somebody took close-ups, and in every one of them my makeup looked cakey and settled into every line. I had been selling makeup for two decades and I still could not look at those pictures without wincing.

So I did the sensible thing and bought my products one at a time, never two in the same month. The sunscreen serum came in April 2025 because Dr. Okafor said every single day. The CC+ Cream came in May because of those photos. A vitamin C serum came in June because my skin still looked dull to me. The CeraVe night cream came in October when my old jar ran out and the weather turned dry. And then, finally, in January 2026, the retinol.

The waiting was on purpose. Dr. Okafor had said to start a retinol slowly if I wanted to, and I wanted my other four products settled first, so that if something went wrong I would know which one to blame. That is not caution I read in a magazine. That is what twenty-two years at a counter does to a person.

Week two was not pretty. My nose and chin flaked and felt tight, and I stayed at two nights a week through February instead of pushing through it.

The retinol I started at two nights a week, not seven

CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum, 1 oz. The listing describes encapsulated retinol with niacinamide, licorice root extract and three essential ceramides, fragrance free and non-comedogenic. Ten months in, it is the last thing I added to my shelf and the one I would not drop.

The listing describes the formula as encapsulated retinol with niacinamide, licorice root extract and three essential ceramides, fragrance free and non-comedogenic, in a one ounce bottle. It also lists the skin types as acne prone and mature, which is an odd pairing until you remember who actually buys a drugstore retinol. What that means at the sink is smaller than it sounds. I use a pea-size amount on dry skin at night, and I keep it away from the corners of my eyes and the sides of my nose. Then I wait about ten minutes and put the night cream over it.

I started at two nights a week, Monday and Thursday. In the second week my nose and chin flaked and felt tight. My instinct, after all those years of being told to push through a launch, was to keep going anyway. I did not. I held at two nights a week through February and let my skin settle, and in March 2026 I moved to every other night. I have stayed there. Never nightly, not once.

A wide bathroom shelf with several skincare bottles and a jar arranged in a row, evening light

Here is the honest part. For the first several weeks I saw nothing, and I had to be patient in a way that retail never trained me to be. Somewhere around the second month my skin started to look brighter and more even to me, and my makeup stopped settling into the lines around my eyes the way it did in those birthday photos. The lines look softer to me in pictures. The sun spots on my cheekbones look a little lighter to me, though they are still there and I expect they will stay.

I cannot tell you which of my five products did what. I changed too many things in too short a window to make that claim honestly, and anybody who tells you otherwise from a bathroom mirror is guessing. What I can tell you is that in ten months I have not had a reaction bad enough to stop, and that the flaking in week two was the worst of it.

At my March 2026 check, Dr. Okafor said my skin looked healthy and to keep wearing sunscreen. That was the whole conversation. She did not bless the retinol, measure anything, or hand me a printout, and I am not going to pretend she did.

What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table

Start slower than you think you need to. Two nights a week for a month, then two nights a week for another month if your skin is still complaining, and let the every-other-night part arrive when it arrives. Patch test anything new on your jaw for a few days first. Wear sunscreen every single morning, all year, rain or shine, because retinol and unprotected sun is not a trade I would make at fifty-eight or at any other age. And if you have a spot that changes, or anything that worries you at all, that is a dermatologist appointment, not a serum.

Be honest with yourself about what you are buying, too. This is a drugstore serum, not a procedure. It did not take the sun spots off my cheekbones and I would not tell you it will take yours off either. What it did was make my skin look a little smoother and a little brighter to me, and make me dread the camera a little less. The CeraVe serum has been the least dramatic thing on my shelf, and if it ran out tomorrow it is the one I would reorder before anything else.

If you start tonight, start at two nights a week

A pea-size amount on dry skin, away from the corners of your eyes and nose, night cream about ten minutes later. That is the entire method I have used with CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum since January. Nothing else to it, and no reason to rush.
